BE it enacted by the Governor of Hongkong, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, as follows:-

Preliminary Provisions.

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1899.

No. 36 of 1899, 7903 with Ordinance No. 31 of 1901 incorporated. See also Junks collisions & stowaway &c... -Pilots ordinance 3: Ordinance, Short title

2. In this Ordinance, and in any rule, regulation, by-law, or Order-in-Council made thereunder, unless the context otherwise requires,—

Stipendiary Magistrate" means and includes any Police Magistrate of the Colony and the Marine Magistrate :

"Master" includes every person (except a pilot) having command or charge of any ship:

Seaman" includes every person (except masters, pilots, and apprentices duly indentured and registered) employed or engaged in any capacity on board any ship:

Vessel" includes any ship or boat or any other description of vessel used in navigation:

Ship" includes any description of vessel used in navigation not propelled by oars, except junks or lorchas not propelled by steam
