N.B. This Ordinance is not yet in operation. ORDINANCE to consolidate and amend the Laws relating to Merchant Shipping, the Duties of the Harbour Master, the Control and Management of the Waters of the Colony, and the Regulation of Vessels navigating the same.

BE it enacted by the Governor of Hongkong, with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council thereof, as follows:-

Preliminary Provisions.

1. This Ordinance may be cited as the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1899.

2. In this Ordinance, and in any rule, regulation, by-law, or Order-in-Council made thereunder, unless the context otherwise requires,—

Stipendiary Magistrate" means and includes any Police Magistrate of the Colony and the Marine Magistrate :

"Master" includes every person (except a pilot) having command or charge of any ship:

Seaman" includes every person (except masters, pilots, and apprentices duly indentured and registered) employed or engaged in any capacity on board any ship:

Vessel" includes any ship or boat or any other description of vessel used in navigation:

Ship" includes any description of vessel used in navigation not propelled by oars, except junks or lorchas not propelled by steam
