(4)-(a) The clear height within the hospitals is to be not less than 6 feet.

(b) Stairways or ladders leading to hospitals are to be placed at a suitable angle and are to be of adequate width.

(c) Doors and passages giving access to hospitals are to be at least 2 feet 6 inches wide in order to permit the use of a stretcher should this be necessary.

(d) Beds are to be of metal and detachable. They may be two tier if desired.

(e) The bulkheads of each isolation hospital are to be of steel, fitted to ensure that no air communication with the remainder of the hospital is possible. Other divisional bulk- heads may be of wood.

(f) The interior surfaces of the hospitals are to be smooth finished.

(g) Deck coverings for the hospitals and dispensary are to be of approved material and suitable scuppers are to be provided for draining the hospital.

(h) Running fresh water is to be laid on to all wash- basins.

(i) Ventilation is to be in accordance with paragraph 12 (4) and provision is to be made for ample natural and artificial lighting.

() Efficient heating arrangements are to be provided in the case of ships which carry unberthed passengers beyond the tropics.

(5) In addition to the hospital accommodation a dispen- sary is to be provided, properly ventilated and fitted with shelves and drawers for medicines, disinfectants, dressings and other necessaries. A full length settee for the examina- tion of patients and a washbasin are also to be provided.

(6) Hospitals are not to be used as accommodation for other than sick passengers. The dispensary is not to be used as a sleeping place for any person. Neither the hospitals nor the dispensary is to be used for the stowage of stores or goods of any description.

(7) In the case of "new" ships, plans of the proposed hospital accommodation, etc. are to be submitted to the Principal Surveyor of Ships for consideration. After it has been ascertained that the accommodation proposed complies generally with these instructions he will forward the plans to the Port Health Officer for approval.

20. HATCHWAYS. In all cases hatchways situated within unberthed passenger spaces are to be guarded by portable stanchions and chains, or by other equally effective means, whilst working cargo.

21. ARRANGEMENTS WHERE LIVESTOCK ARE CARRIED. Effective arrangements to the satisfaction of the Principal Surveyor of Ships are to be made for separating spaces where livestock are carried from the passenger spaces.

Except in cases where livestock are carried on an exposed deck, close partitions and separate ventilation are to be fitted to prevent effluvia from escaping to passenger accom- modation. Where livestock are carried on an exposed deck
