the partitions need not be close fitted, provided that wash- boards are placed to prevent excreta fouling the passenger spaces.

For the purpose of this paragraph poultry and game are not to be considered as livestock.

22. PAINTING OF PASSENGER SPACES.-The sides and crowns of unberthed passenger compartments in between decks, etc. are to be finished in a colour the shade of which will not absorb light to any material extent.

23. MARKING OF PASSENGER SPACES.-Each compart- ment and space measured for the accommodation of unberthed passengers is to be plainly marked in English and also in Chinese or other appropriate language. The clear area in square feet is in each case to be marked in English.

24. NUMBER OF PASSENGERS; INTERNATIONAL Vor- AGES.--Subject to the amendments indicated in this paragraph, the instructions given in paragraph 25 relating to passenger numbers for short international voyages shall apply.

(1) Sub-paragraph (4) is not applicable.

(2) The number of passengers is in no case to exceed the number of bunks fitted in accordance with the following in- structions:---

(i) Each unberthed passenger is to be provided with a separate bunk the inside dimensions of which are to be not less than 6 feet by 2 feet. The bunks are to be properly fitted and secured and arranged so as to provide direct

access to each.

(ii) There shall be not more than 2 tiers of bunks in any compartment.

The distance between the deck and the lower side of the bunk immediately above it is to be not less than 15 inches. The distance between the tiers and between the upper tier and the deck above is to be not less than 2 feet 6 inches.

(iii) In all cases the arrangement of the bunks is to permit of unrestricted access to the sidescuttles.

25. NUMBER OF PASSENGERS; SHORT INTERNATIONAL VOYAGES.-(1)--(a) The number of berthed passengers is to be determined in accordance with paragraph 8 as in the case of foreign-going steamships.

(b) The maximum number of unberthed passengers to be allowed in respect of any compartment otherwise approved for their accommodation and subject to the provision of sufficient space for exercise purposes, is to be determined by dividing the available clear area of such compartment in square feet as follows:-

Detached superstructures or deckhouses by 12. Uppermost between decks by 9.

Lower between decks by 9.

If bunks are provided they are to be fitted in the manner described in sub-paragraph 24 (2).
