Continuing the recent trend, the number of passenger
Transit Railway increased by
while those on ferries decreased by 8% in the third quarter
compared with the same period a year earlier. There were no other significant developments in the public transport
sector. For private transport, the number of newly registered
private cars showed a significant drop of 64%, from 8 447
the third quarter of 1981 to 3 069 in the third quarter of
this year. This was presumably, in large part, due to the
increases as from May this year in the first registration tax,
in the annual licence fee for private vehicles and in duty on
light oils including petrol.

(7) This increase was largely attributable to the opening of the Tsuen Wan
Extension of the Mass Transit Railway in May 1982.
