Continuing the recent trend, the number of passenger

Transit Railway increased by

while those on ferries decreased by 8% in the third quarter

compared with the same period a year earlier. There were no other significant developments in the public transport

sector. For private transport, the number of newly registered

private cars showed a significant drop of 64%, from 8 447

the third quarter of 1981 to 3 069 in the third quarter of

this year. This was presumably, in large part, due to the

increases as from May this year in the first registration tax,

in the annual licence fee for private vehicles and in duty on

light oils including petrol.
