Grounds for exemption
The exemption has been granted on one occasion to a vessels which operates in Hong Kong waters only.. Existing headroom of 1.8M will not result in dis- comfort to the crew on board who are mainly Chinese.
The vessels have an effective air-conditioning system and all doors leading to open decks are provided with self-closing devices.
For the
purpose of this convention, the following terms listed under this article are defined, except where otherwise specified, by
by laws and regulations as follows -
(a) "ship"
"ship" includes any description of vessel used in navigation not propelled by oars but excludes junks or lorchas whether mechanically propelled or not.
(b) "tons" means gross tons.

"officer" means the holder of a certificate of competency or of service, oc a licence, issued under the Merchant Shipping (Certification of Officers) Regulations.
(e) "rating" means a member of the ship's crew other than the master
or a qualified deck/engineer officer.
(f) "petty officer" by custom means a rating serving as the boatswain, carpenter, cassab, chief steward, chief cook, fitter, pumpman, No.1 fireman or No.1 greaser. (not defined by law)
(g)
"crew accommodation" includes sleeping rooms, mess rooms, sanitary accommodation, hospital accommodation, recreation accommodation, store rooms and catering accommodation provided the use of crew but does not include any accommodation which is also used by or provided for the use of passengers.

(h) "prescribed", when used in or with reference to any Ordinance, ■
means prescribed by that Ordinance or by subsidiary legislation made under that Ordinance.
