Second Asian and Pacific Ministerial Conference on Women in Development, Jakarta, 7-14 June 1994

Thank you for your letter of 3.11.93. I have taken over from Ava Chiu and am now responsible for matters pertaining to the World Conference on Women.

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has formally invited the Hong Kong Government, as the associate member of ESCAP, to attend the Second Asian and Pacific Ministerial Conference on Women in Development in Jakarta in June 1994. We understand that the Conference is a prelude to the Fourth World Conference on Women to be held at Peking in September 1995 where the progress of the implementation of the Nairobi Forward Looking Strategies (NFLS) would be reviewed. In preparing for the Jakarta Conference, ESCAP has also asked for a country report on the implementation of the NFLS.

In your

letter of 3.11.93, you advised that the United Kingdom (UK) is supportive of the aims of UN Women's Conferences and that Hong Kong (HK) is committed to NFLS by UK's agreement to them in 1985. We do not expect to have any difficulty in attending the Jakarta Conference or preparing a country report. In fact, there are
