DEL 1993

1995 WORLD CONFERENCE ON WOMEN: HONG KONG

1. I enclose a copy of a letter I have received from the Government Secretariat in Hong Kong.

As we expected, Hong Kong seem set to attend the 1995 Conference in Peking. If they do so they will be part of the UK delegation. But, if they attend the regional prepcon in Jakarta their report will be presented in a different forum and one where we have no influence. The South Asia Conference will include countries normally opposed to progress on women's issues eg Singapore. What happens if Hong Kong agree a regional line which runs contrary to HMG policy?

3.

I am reluctant to deny Hong Kong the opportunity to participate in their regional conference, but I should be grateful for your views and those of copy addressees.

Yours ever
