been affected by the political disagreement and that it was desirable to speed it up (TKP 24 March 1993).

CHINESE TROOPS IN HONG KONG

R1.

Lu Ping said that no decision had been taken on

the size and location of Chinese troops to be stationed in

Hong Kong (contrary to earlier remarks by PLA Deputy Chief of Staff Xu Huizi that troops would be stationed in both

urban and rural areas). Lu said that Hong Kong people should set their hearts at ease as the stationing of troops in Hong Kong would be handled strictly according to the Basic Law (Hong Kong press 2 August 1993).
