Foreign Ministry spokesman Wu Jianmin on 26 April confirmed that Jiang Zemin had assured President Ramos of the Philippines that the import of labour into Hong Kong, including Philippine maids, would continue to be permitted after 1997 (Oriental Daily News 27 April 1993).

At a press conference on 8 April Public Security Minister Tao Siju expresssed satisfaction with the performance of PRC Public Security Liaison Officers stationed in Hong Kong since early 1993. Tao said that co-operation between the police in Hong Kong and China had not been greatly affected by current political problems.

At a press conference on 8 April 1993, Public Security Minister Tao Siju said, in reply to a reporter's question, that China resolutely opposed criminal activities but there were some triads who "did good things" and it was necessary to distinguish between groups. He added that there were some good triads in Hong Kong and, if such organisations loved China and Hong Kong and were conducive to the territory's prosperity and stability, "we will wish to unite with them" (according to the Express of 9 April
1993).
