I mentioned the other day to Christopher Hum that I had been approached earlier this year by Jonathan Dimbleby concerning a programme he was planning to put together about Hong Kong with the intention of broadcasting it only in 1997.
Having thought the idea had drifted into the sands, like so many others, it was revived earlier this week by Francis Gérard who is apparently producing it. I asked him to put on paper what was proposed. He has now done so. I am enclosing a copy of Gerard's letter so that you can see what is planned.
My thinking, subject to any advice you may have, is to agree to take part in these interviews providing that: (i) it is all kept in the freezer until 1997, and (ii) I will not be asked questions about the period after I left office (Gérard suggested that they wanted to do a series of interviews over the next few years to discuss significant events as the unfolded. I said not on.). I take this view, frankly, more because, if they are going to do a programme of this sort there will be a glaring gap if I do not take part, rather than any enthusiasm for this sort of televised history. With the amount of editing that will be needed, the room for subtle distortion is enormous.
I imagine that you already know all about this programme. Jonathan Dimbleby is, I believe, a close friend of Chris Patten and has stayed with him in Hong Kong.
Do you have any views or advice? If so it would be helpful to know before I reply to Gérard. Could you copy your reply please to 19 Drummond Place, Edinburgh H3 5PL, as I shall be there for part of next week.
