Lear David,

Thank you for your letter of 18 September. Apologies for 177) the delay in replying but I have been away with the Prime

Minister in Japan and Malaysia.

I am indeed aware of the planned television programme on Hong Kong. Indeed, earlier this year I spent a weekend with the Pattens in Hong Kong when Jonathan Dimbleby, as you say a close friend of theirs, was also a guest.

I agree:

(a)

(b)

that it is a good idea for you to take part for the reason you give; and

with the conditions you propose to place on your participation, which seem very sensible to me.

I do not think I have any advice beyond that. My impression from talking to Jonathan Dimbleby on that one occasion was that he is mainly interested in how policy-thinking evolved during the period covered in response to events. I would guess that he will do a pretty thorough and workmanlike job but we shall have to see.

Ford

to hear from you
