PRESS STATEMENT

The Governor's spokesman made the following announcement at 4.30pm today (Tuesday).

"The Governor, The Rt Honourable Christopher Patten, will enter the Queen Mary Hospital tomorrow for

treatment of a coronary disorder. Tests over recent weeks have revealed that although Mr Patten's heart is functioning normally, there has been narrowing of two of his coronary arteries.

The treatment, known as percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, will be carried out in the Lewis Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory at the Queen Mary Hospital. It involves the dilation of the arteries

using balloon catheters. This is a common form of

treatment performed under local anaesthetic. It is expected that Mr Patten will be in hospital for up to four days and will then need around a week to ten days convalescence before returning to work. He will be receiving no visitors over this period.

Mr Patten has had annual medical checks for many years and had a comprehensive medical examination befors taking up the post of Governor of Hong Kong. At that stage there was no sign of the present problem.

During Mr Patten's period of treatment and convalescence, the Chief Secretary Sir David Ford will be

appointed Deputy to the Governor."
