Dear Tom,

I have consulted with relevant colleagues on the above, regrettably without much success. The general reaction from industrialists whom we have approached is that the duration proposed for the programmes is much too long - they cannot spare their staff for such periods and the financial support provided is insufficient. There may well be an interest if the Scholarships could be for much shorter periods, viz one to three months, and if travel costs can be totally covered.

-

It is possible that the scheme could be attractive to academic staff but clearly they fall outside the present remit since there would be no direct commercial advantage except, perhaps, in the case of the Industrial Centre here where the Centre provides an admirable shop window for British machine tools etc. A scholarship for IC staff to spend time at e.g. Bridgeport. in Leicester could therefore be deemed to be appropriate: If you support that idea perhaps you could let me·· know and I will approach the Head of the Industrial Centre to see if he wishes to put forward any firm proposals of that type.

Sorry to be rather negative on this particular initiative but the results of my enquiries seem to bear out our own thoughts when we last spoke on the topic.

Regards!
