CBI OVERSEAS SCHOLARSHIPS SCHEME

Thank you for your letter of 5 August, the gist of which I discussed with Tom Buchanan, Director of the British Council in Hong Kong, before he went on leave.

We are having great difficulty in finding suitable candidates for these CBI scholarships. I propose to have a further word later this week with Tom Buchanan on his. return to see if we can salvage anything for this year. I regret that our approach to the Hong Kong Polytechnic (and Professor John Hearn there has been working for us on this) has not produced the end result we sought. I enclose a copy of Professor Hearn's letter which he sent to the British Council on 19 August and which has only just come to my notice. In it he explains a little of the problem we face but he also usefully includes a suggestion that scholarships might be offered to Industrial Centre staff to strengthen their links with the UK (Bridgeport, the machine tool manufacturer,' has already provided equipment to the Industrial Centre). If you think this might be acceptable under the terms of the scholarship scheme, we will ask Professor Hearn to have a word with the head of the Industrial Centre to take this forward.

Las ever
