ARE WE DOING ENOUGH TRADE PROMOTION IN THE UK?
Our principal arm for trade promotion is the China Britain Trade Group which has 11 staff in
London, 6 representative offices in China and a grant of £301,000 from the British Overseas Trade Board. This is a substantial proportion of the resources available to me for promotion of trade in the world as a whole.
Under its new
President, Sir Michael Palliser, the Group is working out an intensive programme of activities to encourage UK firms in the lines of business with the best prospects in China (infrastructural projects, power
generation,
communications, food and
agriculture and the
emerging market for
consumer goods) and help them into the market.
In November they
organised the largest UK trade and
investment mission to
China for 200 years.
I
accompanied it, and there were over 90 UK
businessmen present.
are following it up aggresively.
