ARE BRITISH COMPANIES INVESTING IN THIS RAPIDLY GROWING MARKET?
Direct UK investment in China has been relatively modest but Pilkington Glass, Glaxo, Unilever, and United Biscuits have all established joint venture manufacture in China.
Shell has entered
into an agreement with four Chinese organis- ations to conduct a feasibility study on an oil refinery and petro- chemical complex which, if it goes ahead, will be the largest foreign venture in China
(c. US $2bn).
I am particularly keen that British business takes full advantage of the investment oppor- tunities in China which I saw for myself when I supported the CBTG's mission in November and when I visited Shanghai in July last year, and on my recent visit to Guangzhou.
