Q.
Why is a unit from Hong Kong being used for this task?
A. The Army regularly reviews its commitments and available
assets. In this case it was judged sensible to use one of the
Hong Kong battalions in order to give greater flexibility to use
UK based units for other tasks.
Q.
Has this happened before?
A.
Units from Hong Kong have served an emergency tour
elsewhere:
for example in Cyprus and during the Gulf war. This
is the first time an infantry battalion will have been involved.
Q. who will pay?
A.
sky?
The UK Ministry of Defence [if pressed
there is not extra
cost to the Hong Kong Government. HKG will not be liable for
the DCA costs of these troops while they are away. ]
Q. Is this move motivated by a desire to reduce the size of
the Garrison before the PLA take over?
The deployment is temporary the battalion will return to
Hong Kong. No effect on long term plans for reductions in the
A.
garrison.
