Visit to Washington

I shall be visiting Washington from 2 to 5 March for talks with the CIA, NSC, State Department and various agencies.

2.

I should be grateful for briefs covering any questions of interest. I envisage the talks focusing on the former Soviet Union, proliferation, the Middle East and the Gulf, terrorism, the Far East (including China and Japan, Korea, Cambodia, Vietnam) Europe (east, central and western), arms control and US defence policy and spending.

But you should not feel in any way tied by this list if there are other matters you think should be explored.

Briefs should take the form of questions followed by background, which in many cases could take the form of a copy of the latest JIC paper. They should be with me on Friday 21 February.

I should be grateful if the Secretary could obtain briefing from the agencies by the same date.
