Dear Mr

M-Voysey

We spoke regarding Hugh Griffith's letter to you, concerning the protection for designers of semiconductor topographies in the UK Scheduled Dependencies and dated 11 February 1992, and I promised to send you such documents as I had found thus far, which appeared relevant to the matter in hand.

The early documents (1987/88) to which I referred are enclosed, together with the promised copies of similar recent correspondence between ourselves and the Home Office.

I also enclose a very pertinent document which has been recently received from Hong Kong and which relates directly to the present matter. This seems to have been adequately dealt with but placed on the incorrect file. The answer to Mr Cheung's specific query was that we have no plans for substantive changes to the provisions of the UK Design Right (Semiconductor Topographies) Regulations 1989, but the communication is clearly most interesting from the standpoint of what it says about Hong Kong's intention to introduce corresponding legislation in the near future.

Presumably therefore, all that is necessary with regard to Hong Kong is a fairly urgent suggestion from yourself that the date of introduction of the proposed legislation be brought forward to the end of this year.

yous

incurely Brian Simpson
