Please refer to the selection of MPs' letters which you
passed to Hong Kong Department requesting confirmation that replies had gone.
We have now traced all of these bar one and I enclose your copies with the dates of reply inserted.

3. The one reply we have been unable to find is to the letter from Ian Bruce MP dated 2 January. We are absolutely
certain that a draft reply was submitted to Mr Maude's
office (three separate members of the department remember
it).
However, despite an exhaustive search, we have been
unable to retrieve it. In the circumstances I feel that
enough time has been spent on this and we should assume that
the MP has received his reply. As all the others you sent
have been found and it is unlikely that, after all this
time, the MP would not have sent a reminder, I recommend
that we let sleeping dogs lie.
