MPS' CORRESPONDENCE

1.

Please refer to the selection of MPs' letters which you

passed to Hong Kong Department requesting confirmation that replies had gone.

We have now traced all of these bar one and I enclose your copies with the dates of reply inserted.

2.

3. The one reply we have been unable to find is to the letter from Ian Bruce MP dated 2 January. We are absolutely

certain that a draft reply was submitted to Mr Maude's

office (three separate members of the department remember

it).

However, despite an exhaustive search, we have been

unable to retrieve it. In the circumstances I feel that

enough time has been spent on this and we should assume that

the MP has received his reply. As all the others you sent

have been found and it is unlikely that, after all this

time, the MP would not have sent a reminder, I recommend

that we let sleeping dogs lie.
