Thank you for your letter of 23 May.

My letter of 11 May to Mr Humphreys should indeed have mentioned wives and war-widows. I apologise for the slip.

However, I should explain that there was no intention that these wives and war widows were to be given British citizenship. I enclose an extract from the speech made by the Home Secretary on 19 April during the second reading of the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Bill. This makes it clear that the Government are offering a firm assurance that war widows will be allowed to come and live in Britain if they so wish. Under the present immigration rules any wife of a British citizen has a right to accompany her husband to Britain. The Government are extending this right also to widows.

I hope this is now clear but if you have any further query please let me know.
