Dear Paul,

I refer to your exchange of letters with Alistair Lang of the OMELCO London office.

We are all very grateful for your support for the non-UK spouses of British citizens.

Despite recent assurances by the Home Secretary, this continues to be of concern in Hong Kong. In particular, it is a point of major importance to the Royal Hong Kong Police. Many of their key Inspectors are British expatriates and a very large number are married to Hong Kong spouses. A number of them are leaving the Force and returning to the United Kingdom with their wives to secure the position of the latter, in event that something should happen to the husband. This is clearly a ludicrous situation and one that must be rectified.

In pursuing this issue at the present time, I do, however, recognise that the priority is to ensure that the Nationality package goes through in July and I would not want any amendments to cause delays. Thus, it may be that this must be pursued in parallel to the Nationality package.

Unfortunately, I cannot now be in London in June when it would have been good to have got together, but I will be there later in the year and hope that we will be able to meet up.

Incidentally, we are having a party at my brother's studio in Tite Street on Thursday, 6th September and I enclose an invitation, in the hope that you will both be able to join us.

Best wishes.

Yours sincerely,

M

Martin Barrow
