Boatmaster : HA THAT QUYEN

This group of 15 left HO CHI MINH by train on 2-3-90. Three days later, they came to HA NOI where they had to stay for 4 days because of adverse weather. The boatmaster's friend, called THO, assisted them to hire a private lorry for HA COI where they took an overnight rest at THO's home. The next day they went to HAI NINH by bus. Upon arrival, they were introduced to a VN/M courier who led them to cross the Sino-Vietnamese border at a charge of 0.1 tael of gold per head.

It was believed that the courier had bribed the VN officials as all of them went through an official check point without any inspection or enquiry.

When they arrived at DONG XING (東興 ) of China, each of them had to pay RMB 2 as a toll. During their 3-day stay there, they met a CH/M in name of AH MAN (og ž ) who promised to lead them to GUANG DONG (

) and to purchase a boat for their onwards exodus. They had contributed a total sum of 1,300 US dollars before they were brought to AH MAN's house at QIN ZHOU (

where they stayed During the period AH MAN left them for arranging a boat at TAI PING

Subsequently, they reached TAI PING by bus on 2-4-90 via

for 20 days.
