Death of former General Secretary Hu Yaobang, of an 'extensive cardiac infarction' on 8 April at a Politburo meeting. Obituary issued - no mention of Hu's resignation in 1987.
Students put up posters on university campuses to honour Hu's memory.
More than 3,000 cadres and students visit the home of Hu Yaobang to offer their condolences to his family. Hundreds of teachers and students go to Tiananmen square to pay their last respects. (China Daily 18.4.89).
