CHINA: CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS

1

I attach a chronology of events related to the student demonstrations.

2

I began preparing this chronology using only Chinese sources including the China Daily, SWB and FBIS. Although the Chinese press reported when demonstrations took place, there was no mention of the numbers of protestors involved or of the anti-government slogans calling for Li Peng to step down and Deng Xiaoping to retire. These were widely reported in the Hong Kong and Western press.

3

China Daily appeared to bring out the more moderate parts of leaders' speeches. Peking television (rumoured to be under military protection) tended to highlight the firmer approach. Publication of the European edition of China Daily was suspended on 6 June.
