Tiananmen Square to hear speakers calling for political reform. (Hong Kong domestic service 19.4.89)

An estimated 10,000 people gather in Tiananmen Square after police lift blockade imposed around the square on 19 April. (Kyodo 20.4 89).

Peking radio reports attempt to storm Zhongnanhai, saying some people chanted

'reactionary slogans' called for the overthrow of the CCP and threw bricks and bottles at the police.

Xinhua calls for social stability. Accuses some people of using pretext of mourning Hu Yaobang to attack the Party and Government, make inflammatory speeches and deliberately creating disturbances.

Hu Yaobang's funeral ceremony. Some 100,000 people turn out on Tiananmen Square, chanting pro-democracy slogans and waving banners.

Disturbance in Xian. Rioters attack provincial government compound. Property and vehicles are

burned, shops looted and public security

personnel injured.

Disturbance in Changsha. 'Lawless elements' accused of wrecking and looting shops, injuring policemen. Police make 100 arrests.

Zhao Ziyang leaves Peking for official visit to North Korea, accompanied by Vice-Premier Wu Xueqian, Deputy Secretary General of CCP Central Military Commission Hong Xuezhi, Head of International Liaison Department Zhu Liang, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Liu Shunqing, and Vice-Minister of Railways Luo Yunguang.

21 universities and colleges go on strike in Peking. (Hong Kong Ta Kung Pao 24.4.89). Meeting scheduled between government officials and Qinghua University aborted because students could not agree on who should represent them.
