the needs of different sectors of the economy. with the growing economic relations with Guangdong and the development of Hong Kong as a major financial centre in the region, there is likely to be a slow but steady shift in employment from manufacturing to services. Hong Kong's educational and training institutions will have to adjust to these changes by providing more courses in financial and related business services like accounting, computer systems analysis, insurance, law, trading and banking. Professionals in these fields are likely to be in greater demand in the future. Apart from serving Hong Kong, some of their services are likely to be demanded by enterprises in Guangdong or even China generally.

Language training, particularly in English and Putonghua, is also important. Putonghua training has received much attention in recent years. It should not, however, be at the expense of English language training, given that English is the international language of business and that Hong Kong's economic future depends on its remaining an international city.

(c) Continuing to improve physical

infrastructure, particularly

infrasturctural links between Hong Kong and

Guangdong

The Government has a responsibility to ensure that an efficient physical infrastructure including railways, road, port facilities (including airport and container port), tele-communication facilities, and the various types of utility services, is provided to meet the needs of the Hong Kong economy.
