MR. MICHARL VELSH;
I mean,
there is
Would you consider, so that we can get moving and
get more democracy in Hong Kong, bringing forward the
elections proposed for 1991 and bringing forward the
others and is it possible to do that?
such a thing as the electoral law which will have to be
looked at and other different things, Is it possible to
bring it forward and would you be in favour of bringing
these elections forward?
SIR DAVID VILSON;
As you say,
we have got our next elections due in
1991.
I am not sure that I would be in favour of bringing
those forward, simply because that would introduce yet
another degree of uncertainty into Hong Kong at the
moment.
I was suggesting that opinions have been changing
recently and they may indeed change again.
I think it
would be better to allow those opinions to begin to focus
clearly, put some distance between the dreadful events we
have recently seen and for the different political groups
in Hong Kong to have time Lo come to a common view to do
that rather than to du sudden things, sudden changes of
policy like changing the whole pattern of elections.
