set of
Transport planning in Hong Kong has followed the
White Paper on Internal Transport (1979) which
stipulates a
transport infrastructure
development programmes and the policy for Hong Kong
up to the year 1991. Experience in the last decade
(1976-1986) indicates that the continuous rapid growth both in economic and transport
transport sectors
has
exerted pressure on Hong Kong's transport system
which calls for the need to review the transport
irvestments and policy options. Thus in 1986 the
Hong Korg Government commissioned Comprehensive
Transport Study-2 to assist in drawing up transport
policies up to the year 2001.
Freliminary projectiors nade from CTS-2 indicate
among others, tne growth
in
that,
passenger traffic and in goods
cross-border
traffic or
cross-border area will be substantially increased.
To cope with this demand, a number of road and rail
projects both for irternal and cross-border traffic
use are now under consideration/evaluation. Because
the usefulness and dependability of CTS-2 largely
relies on the accuracy and reliability of the
information from both China and Hong Kong,
assistance from the Guangdong and Shenzhen
authorities is essential for the success of the
study.
