Airport Development in Hong Kong
1.
average
While
The economy of liong Kong has shown rapid growth
over chic past ten years, with an annual
growth rate of GDP of 8.2% recorded. manufacturing is the largest sector in the economy, the financial and business services sectors are also important. Hong Kong has a free-enterprise, market-oriented economy. The Governmert's approach is to ensure the adequate provision of trained manpower, infrastructural facilities and services to support economic development, without interfering with the operation of the market mechanism.
2. The Fong Kong International Airport (HKIA) plays a vital role in international carriage of people and goods. Reflecting the expected continued growth of the liong Kong economy, the number of air passengers is forecast to increase by 7.5% p.a. to 1990, the
nurber of aircraft moverents 7.0% p.a., and air
cargo 8.4% p.a. Assuming sonie demand management techniques, it is expected that Kai Tak will be able to meet traffic demand up to 1995-2005.
3.
Two airport consultancy studies will be commissioned
by the
the Government in October 1987 ard early 1988 respectively. The former study will assess the development potential and ultimate capacity of the BKIA at Kai Tak, and the economic disbenefits due to demand not being fully met. The latter study will further investigate the feasibility of Chek Lap Kok and East Lantau as possible replacement airport sites. In order to facilitate airport plarning in both kk and Shenzher, more exchange of information
would be useful.
