Mr. G.A. Higginson (Director of Marine, Hong Kong)
enquired about the scale of development of the port in
Yantian and the planred feeder road network associated
with the port development.
Vice-Governor Yang replied that large scale port
development project in Yantian was only under
consideration. The scale of development and the exact
location would not be decided until the feasibility
study was completed. Its implementation would still be
dependent on overall economic development in Guangdong,
ir particular, Shenzhen. If a large port were to be
built, large road network and supporting facilities
would be required. At present, only small berths for
vessels between 3,000 to 5,000 tonnes for handling
construction materials and mineral ore were being
planned. Fe added that for large projects, the approval
of the State Council had to be sought.
2.2.6 Mr. Higginson enquired about the time scale for the
projected increase ir the throughput of Guangzhou port
from 6.8 million tones to 9.5 million tonnes.
