expected to reach the target in the 'Eighth Five-Year
Plan' (1991-1965).

Port from 15 million tonnes to 31 million tonnes.

In reply to an enquiry by Sir David Akers-Jones, Vice
-Governor Yang said that there were not many deep water
berths capable for handling vessels over 35,000 tornes
in Guangdong. The Yantian proposal was only under investigation. After some dredging work, the Huangpu
Port could handle vessels up to 35,000 tonnes.

because it would be inadvisable to duplicate in Hong Kong the facilities being planned ir. Guangzhou.

developments in Guangdong as well as in other places in
South China had to be taken step by step. At present,

transportatior network as other provinces in South-West China relied on ports in Guangcong.

enquired or the presert position of the containerization
of rail freight and the projected trend. He added that
the proposed Fung Hom Terminal expansion, when
completed, could handle 9 million tonnes of cargos, of
which it was estimated some 35% would be containerized.
