CONSULATE-GENERAL AND RESIDENTIAL ACCOMMODATION IN HONG KONG AFTER 1997

1.

(13) 14

The Governor has now formally set out his views about the way forward on accommodation in Hong Kong after 1997.

2.

The Governor concludes that we cannot at this stage reach firm conclusions as to how to secure before 1997 land titles that we shall be able to rely upon thereafter. He therefore believes that we should concentrate now on trying to identify suitable premises (particularly for offices).

3.

Before OED can take any search further, we need to know a good deal more about the office location and space requirements of all the Departments who will eventually need to be represented. To start this off, I have minuted separately at some length to the Chief Clerk.

4.

Meanwhile, I attach a draft interim reply that the PUS may wish to send to the Governor.
