The Committee will be undertaking a survey on civic awareness in November 1986; to ascertain the level of public awareness of civic education and on the current level of participation by the community in civic education. It is intended to conduct similar surveys on a

a regualr basis monitor the views and level of civic awareness of the public.

Community participation projects

The Committee considers that its primary function is to stimulate participation from the community in the promotion of civic education. To this end, $250,000 has been put aside for the setting up of a Community Participation Scheme under which community organisations were invited

invited to apply for funds for the organisation of civic education projects each costing up to $10,000. More than a hundred applications have been received and the successful applicants will be announced at the end of October 1986.

Publicity programmes

The Committee has launched a publicity campaign civic education principally through radio and television APIs (announcements fo public interest). The first phase of the campaign is designed to encourage citizens to participate in community affairs by approaching their local Mutual Aid Committees or District Boards with matters of local concern or with suggestions for environmental improvement. Further APIS will be released at a later stage publicising the work of the Urban and Regional Councils, and the Legislative and Executive Councils.

The campaign is being supported by a a theme song and the slogan "Care for your community, work for your community. In addition, a special logo has been designed to

to promote the work of the Committee. Members of the Committee have wherever possible accepted invitations to attend District Board and other local functions, as well as publicising civic education through media appearances and interviews.

Conference on civic education

The Committee plans to hold a conference in February 1987,

to evaluate work done in promoting civic education, to discuss future directions and to enhance public concern about the importance of civic education. The theme of the conference, for which planning is well underway, will be "Civic
