Visa Requirements of European Countries for HK BDTCs

Nigel French in Brussels sent me a copy of John Boyd's letter to William Ehrman of FCO which enclosed your note of 28th March about the Swedish visa requirements and a complete list of visa requirements of other European countries.

2.

My concern is not about Sweden but about the posion in France. For some time, the French Consulate in London has been advising BDTC passport holders to get visas for visits of any length and recent enquiries were met with the reply that they had been requested to do so by the French Consulate in Hong Kong. The requirement to obtain visas has now been confirmed in writing together with the reyirement to pay a fee of approximately £6.00 in the case of post-1983 passports.

3.

I have checked with Hong Kong Department, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and they have had no recent correspon- dence about French requirements.

4.

As this is the time of the year when many tourists from Hong Kong will be visiting France, it would seem advisable that travellers should be made aware of the possibility of them being refused entry without a visa. Doubtless, you will also wish this question to be raised with the French officially.
