It would be helpful as background only to our approach to the French Embassy here to know if your colleague, Mr Chow Kwok-Chuen, was aware of the terms of the correspondence enclosed with your letter under reference before he set off on his travels.

The advice given by the travel agency in London to your colleague is strange. I have consulted two of the best known manuals used by the travel trade (TIM and the World Tourist Organisations manual on Frontier formalities) and both agree that there is no visa requirement for holders of British passports visiting France for less than three months. Of course, this does not mean that the agency consulted by your colleague either possess these publications or looked at them if they did. In my experience, which extends over many years in numerous countries, travel agents are normally not the most reliable sources of advice or assistance.
