the sending of a "letter to Mrs. Margaret Thatcher" aroused great sondern
amongst the students. During the incident, a total of nearly two
hundred big-character posters appeared on the campus to discuss the
The Students' Union also convened a'"general meeting" to dimoues
the matter. It was attended by nearly 1,500 students, a record in the
Union's history. The meeting started at 6.00 p.m. and continued up to
4.00 a.m. of the following morning when it had to be dissolved because
of the lack of a quorum, the formation of which required 520 members.
However, since the "general meeting" had not been able to
solve the problem, the Students' Union decided to hold a "general poll"
on 2nd November. One of the motions to be voted on was "that a general
opinion survey should be conducted within the University in the next
4 months by the Students' Union, and that the findings thereof should
be used as the basis for formulating the Union's principles and stance
in respect of the future issue which will serve as working guidelines
for the Union in future".
The motion was carried.
