1. Mr Lange, who is both Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of New Zealand, will be seeing:

(a) the Secretary of State - on 25 September at a breakfast

bilateral in New York;

(b)

the Prime Minister - on 30 September in a discussion a deux at Chequers, to be followed by lunch there.

2. SPD are required to prepare or co-ordinate briefing for these meetings. The briefing for the Secretary of State and the Prime Minister will each be in the format of a single consolidated brief (which will include the usual points to make - in very pithy form - and essential background).

3. I should be grateful for addressee department's help in the provision of a brief paragraph or so of briefing on the following topics:

Nuclear ships' visits to New Zealand ports

Disarmament, and nuclear testing in the

Pacific

Nuclear dumping in the Pacific
