Dear High Commissioner

Thank you for your letter of 25 September with which you handed over a copy of a message from Sir Geoffrey Howe together with an advance text of the Agreement on the future of Hong Kong. I should be grateful if you would thank the Foreign Secretary for his message and express our appreciation for the consideration he and his office have shown

x

The Prime Minister Mr Lange will be issuing a press statement either in New York tomorrow or during his visit to London welcoming the Agreement. I need hardly say that the New Zealand Government supports the Agreement and is confident that it will provide a firm basis for the continued stability and prosperity of Hong Kong.

Yours sincerely

Serthen

Geoffrey Palmer
