JAPANESE VIEWS ON HONG KONG

1. When I called with Mr Ken Walker on Mr Taro Aso (Suzuki faction, Fukuoka 2 constituency) yesterday, he spoke briefly about Hong Kong. In his view Japanese businessmen were taking an optimistic approach to investment in Hong Kong. This, he thought, was not unjustified because the Chinese would certainly not do anything to undermine Hong Kong's prosperity or profitability. Such action would completely contradict their "merchant" mentality. This may be interesting as corroboration of the views of other Japanese MPs and businessmen.
