Dear Stuart,

China Quarterly

Thank you for your letter of 19th July and for your assistance in trying to get an advance copy. The issue, devoted to Hong Kong, will be of interest and the advance copy will enable the Home Affairs Branch to be better prepared with reaction. To save time, is it possible for the proof copy, when ready, to be facsimiled to us, do you think?

In respect of this particular issue the Secretariat has earmarked funds for 40 copies for distribution within the Secretariat. Orders will be placed either directly with the publisher or through SCMP. (I might add that there is no question of photocopying the advance copy if and when it reaches us.) As regards other departments, some of them may have placed standing orders for the China Quarterly. It is not possible to tell whether additional copies will be required outside the normal order and outside the use of public funds.

Thank you also for the ExCo draft on MPs' visit to Hong Kong. The paper is being processed for submission to ExCo.

Yours aye,

Libby

( Elizabeth Wong )(Mrs) Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs
