MISS CLAIRE HOLLINGWORTH

1. Miss Bailey's minute of 21 July and Mr Clift's of 28 July refer.

2. Mr Osborne (new APS/Mr Luce) told me this afternoon that Mr Luce would like to see Miss Hollingworth provided it were made clear to her that he was doing so to hear her views on Hong Kong rather than the other way round. We have been asked to suggest a time for this meeting, bearing in mind that Mr Luce will be away from the Office from the end of next week until the end of the month.

According to HKGO, Miss Hollingworth is in London until 10 or 11 September. She then goes on via Paris to Hong Kong, expecting to arrive there on 19 September. As Mr Luce apparently wishes to see her other than as part of a group during his visit to Hong Kong (and despite Mr Clift's reservations) I imagine that some time next week would be the most appropriate. Presumably, Mr Luce wishes to get as much of the flavour of Hong Kong as he can, from various sources, before his visit there.

4. Unless you have any overriding considerations to put to Mr Luce I would propose to tell his office to fix a mutually convenient time next week for him to meet Miss Hollingworth, and that we will provide a short defensive brief.
