their hut. The prisoner was unhappy with
s ingratitude. Anyhow, Mr YEUNG was still shocked to hear of the present incident because the prisoner was not an unreasonable, irritative or brutal type of person. He prayed for clemency to commute the prisoner's death sentence so that the prisoner would have a chance to be discharged someday and turn a new leaf.

Mr YEUNG knew the prisoner in China for 6 years and met him again in Hong Kong in 1979. When the prisoner lived with him for 2 months in Fanling, he observed the prisoner as helpful in household chores; quiet, introvert, easy-going and friendly in character. Most of the prisoner's associates were his clansmen who were all engaged in decent jobs.
Thus, he believed that the prisoner had not mixed with dubious elements.
Although the prisoner had disclosed to Mr YEUNG before about the victims' ungrateful attitude towards him, the prisoner had not shown any intention to hurt them at all. Therefore, Mr YEUNG did not understand why the prisoner had committed such a silly act.

Furthermore,
Mr LAM revealed that the prisoner had worked steadily under him since August 1979, earning $1400 a month. He was satisfied with the prisoner's responsible, punctual and hard-working attitude. the prisoner could get along harmoniously with his co-workers and no argument or fights had occurred during his 11⁄2 years' working history. Mr LAM was also impressed by the prisoner's mild temperament since the prisoner could tolerate and control his temper when being teased and taken advantage of by his co-workers. He regretted for the loss of a helpful and conscientious employee like the prisoner. Mr LAM also prayed for leniency to the prisoner.

Mr TSE had worked with the prisoner at Cheung Sha Wan Abattoir for 11⁄2 years.
Like his work supervisor, he had a sympathetic view on the prisoner and passed favourable comments on the prisoner's performance at work.
The prisoner was said to be on good terms with other workers. Mr TSE regarded him as a sociable man but he had no idea of the prisoner's private life.

Madam TIN was contacted on phone but she refused to disclose any information. Neither was she willing to receive a visit from the investigating officer nor would come for an interview.
Efforts had been made to contact the prisoner's other fellow- countrymen like YEUNG Shun-ming, YEUNG Yuen-yau and NGAI Ping-sun for more information on the prisoner. However, this was fruitless because the prisoner could not give up-dated addresses or phone numbers of them.
