Departure Group (a)

This group of 10 refugees claims to have departed from Hon Gai, Quang Ninh Province on 20th October 1981. The boatmaster NGUYEN VAN TRAM was detained for a short while in Beihai and subsequently arrived in Hong Kong on board L/M 1626.

The members of this group all satisfied the interviewing team with their recent knowledge of Vietnam and they gave a convincing account of their departure and voyage. They claim that the Chinese authorities directed them to take on board at Zhanjiang five refugees who claimed to be members of Departure Group (a). These five are suspect ECVIIs, as are all those claiming to be members of Departure Group (a) (see Annexe A).
