Ground Access (Cont'd.)
High speed hover-ferries could also link the airport to Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Macau and other locations in the Pearl Estuary.
Journey times to the Kowloon Peninsula of 30 minutes by road, 40 by rail, and 40 by high speed ferry would be possible.
The urban developments of the Shenzhen SEZ and the New Towns of Hong Kong would all be within 20-30 minutes by road.
Guangzhou would be within 11⁄2 hour journey by road on the proposed superhighway.
Macau could be reached by hoverferry in well under 1 hour.
2.9 Transport Networks
The main road network in Guangdong Province is currently under- going a programme of improvements which will connect Shenzhen - Shekou - Taiping - Dongguan and Canton with a consistent 12 m surfaced road with all river crossings bridged. Similar improvements are underway on the Guangzhou-Macau road.
A Super Highway is also being planned which will connect Hong Kong Guangzhou Macau with a limited access ultimately dual three lane motorway. This includes a major bridge crossing at Boca Tigris which will effectively connect both sides of the Pearl River and put Macau within 140 km of the proposed airport.
An agreement has recently been reached to construct a new road border crossing at Lok Ma Chau to be opened by 1985. This will eventually link the Super Highway with the New Territories (HK) Circular Route (NTCR). The NTCR is programmed for completion in 1984 and links the New Towns in the New Territories to each other and to the urban areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island with a dual three lane motorway.
The British section of the Kowloon - Canton railway is being mordernised between Hung Hom and Lo Wu. This involves double tracking, electrification to 25 kv, and the introduction of high speed (upto 120 kph) and high capacity (60,000 passengers per hour per direction) stock. There is currently no firm commitment to improvements north of Lo Wu.
