Ar Humphrey Atkins, Conservative me.ber of Tarliament for Spelthorne, is Lord Privy Seal and a member of the Cabinet.

Humphrey Edward Gregory Atkins; son of the late E.D. Atkins of Nyeri, Kenya, was born in 1922. Educated in Britain at Wellington, in 1940 he gained a special entry cadetship to the Royal Navy, being promoted to Lieutenant in 1943. lis service in the war was mainly in destroyers on Atlantic convoy duties. He retired from the Navy to work in a Kirkcaldy linoleum manufacturing firm in Scotland and then in their London office, and is a former director of a firm of financial advertising agents.

Mr Atkins was elected to Tarliament in 1955 as member for Merton and order and represented this constituency until 1970 when he was elected to represent his present constituency (following constituency boundary changes). From 1959 to 1962 he was Tarliamentary Trivate Secretary to the Civil Lord of the Admiralty. Between 1964 and 1970, when the Conservative Farty was in Opposition, he was Secretary of the Parliamentary Defence Committee (from 1965 to 1967) and from 1967 to 1970 an

pposition hip. then the Conservative Party assumed office in June 1970, he was appointed Treasurer of the Household (a political appointment carrying with it the office of Government Deputy Chief hip). In December 1973 he became Tarliamentary Secretary to the Treasury and Government Chief hip appointment he held until the return to office of the Labour Tarty following the general election of February 1974. Opposition Chief hip in the House of Co.mons from March 1974 until the general election in May 1979 when he was appointed Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, a post which he retained until becoming Lord Frivy Seal in September 1981.
