PRESS STATEMENT BY LORD PRIVY SEAL
12 January 1982
I am delighted to be paying my first visit to the Republic of Korea and am particularly grateful for the warm
elcome extended to me by the Korean. Government.
The ties of friendship between our two countries are now a hundred years old and the purpose of my visit is to emphasise the strength of these ties and to underline our hope for their continued development.
Britain has always maintained a strong interest in the stability of the region and I conveyed these feelings to His Excellency President Chun Doo Hwan. Also your Foreign Linister Mr Lho Shin Yong and I had an extremely valuable and friendly exchange of views.
We remain aware of the continuing threat to the stability from the North and I have spent most of today discussing this with the Commander in Chief of the United Nations Command Gen. John Aickham, Jr. I have also visited Tanmunjon an ever present reminder of the tension that exists in this peninsular.
We in Britain greatly admire the progress made by the Korean economy over the past two decades and I have had most
informative discussions with the Vice Minister for Economic Tlanning ir Chung In Yong about future prospects for the Korean economy.
I am confident that British advanced technology and our financial institutions are well placed to cooperate in the further economic development of Korea.
Finally, we in Britain are delighted to offer our
congratulations to the Republic of Korea on being chosen as the venue for the 1988 Olympic Games.
